Everyone remembers picture day…school picture day, work ID picture day, wedding/engagement pictures, or even your first day at a new job or school. Nothing is worse than waking up on the day of an extremely important event and having a big, red, juicy pimple on your face. Could this pimple have been prevented? Are there steps that you could take to have the beautiful, healthy skin that you deserve? If you are curious about getting flawless skin, learn a bit about non comedogenic products!

Everyone gets pimples, some are more affected by acne then others.

You may have first started noticing acne and pimples around puberty. Personally, I never had many pimples as a teenager, but as an adult I have had some issues with acne. Adult acne can be a problem for many unti

l their 40s/50s depending on your skin type. My mom is nearing 60 and she unfortunately still gets acne. There are things that we can do to help prevent acne and there are things that we do that encourage acne and pimples. There are many ingredients in makeup

products and cleansers that actually clog pores and cause

acne. It could be that the face wash you are using is not cleansing your skin at all, but causing you to break out! Or it could be the foundation or primer that you are using is not that great for your skin.

Recently there has been an increase and demand for natural makeup. Makeup and beauty products still go unregulated for the most part. Makeup companies can still put many unsafe ingredients like sulfates, phthalates, parabens, and even formaldehyde!

These harmful makeup ingredients are not only dangerous, but can cause skin irritation and acne. There are numerous skin conditions that are caused by harmful makeup ingredients. If you are one that often gets acne, has oily skin, or are looking for better types of products, start thinking about non comedogenic brands of makeup.

What is non comedogenic?

What exactly is non comedogenic? Why the recent increase in the desire for non comedogenic makeup and non comedogenic brands? In order to understand what non comedogenic is, we must first break down the word. A comedo or comedones (plural), are pimples! Or at least a type of pimple that appears on the skin. It is a type of acne, resulting from clogged pores. Pores are all over the skin, face, and body. They are small holes on the skin that you are able to see with a mirror or if you look very closely.

Pimples occur because bacteria and dead skin cells fill the pore and plug it up. Comedones could be whiteheads if they are closed at the skin’s surface, with a little white tip (hence the name whitehead). If the comedones is open at the skin’s surface and you are able to see the plugged darkened area, it is called a blackhead due to the melanin.

Non comedogenic means that it does not clog pores. They are able to create products that are oil free. This is great for those with oily skin or if you are prone to acne or skin irritation. Clogged pores results in acne. Non comedogenic will not clog pores causing acne.

What Does Non Comedogenic Mean for Beauty and Makeup Products?

The goal of non comedogenic is to not clog pores and to not cause acne. In order to do so, non comedogenic products are made oil-free. Our skin naturally creates and secretes oils. Non comedogenic help to maintain the balance of oils that we need, meanwhile removing the excess oils that clog pores and result in juicy, red pimples. It is a great idea to use non comedogenic cleansers to remove makeup and wash your face at the end of the day. It is also great to Moisturize with non comedogenic products as well as other steps in your daily beauty routine like foundations, primers, facial oils, sunscreen, etc.

Using a non comedogenic primer is such an important step in doing your makeup. Add a non comedogenic primer to your beauty routine. By using a non comedogenic primer, you can make your makeup masterpiece last all day long. If you use a primer that is not a non comedogenic primer, you risk inflammation and an acne flare up. It is so important that when you reach for a primer, look for a primer that is oil free. Excess oils cause clogged pores which cause acne and skin inflammation. Try this Top Rated Non Comedogenic Primer:

Best Non Comedogenic Brands

It is so important to know what you are putting on your face with the various products of your makeup routine. It is very important to read the labels and to read the ingredients of the various products. There are many brands that are creating non comedogenic makeup and beauty products. Not all of the items that they carry are non comedogenic, but they do offer non comedogenic options. Mineral makeup is a great choice and option to avoid breakouts and acne.

Great Non Comedogenic Brands:
Clinique
Lancome
Bare Minerals
NARS
Hourglass
Estee Lauder
Burt’s Bees

Use Non Comedogenic Makeup!

We need to take better care of our skin. This means what we put in our bodies as much as what we put on ourselves. We have to be mindful about the various cleansers, moisturizers, foundations, etc that we are using. Many of these items are full of harmful makeup ingredients. It is important that if you have acne or are prone to acne or skin sensitivities that you should always use non Comedogenic beauty products in every step of your beauty routine. It is so important to use products that will not cause further damage or irritation or even a skin condition.

Eat Non Comedogenic Foods!

What exactly does that mean? It is important to remember that we are what we eat. We need to be more mindful of what we are fueling our bodies with. Our diet and nutrition matters. Instead of eating processed foods, go for the vegetable option. A great thought to have before you choose your next meal is “Is this a healing food?” Try limiting sugar and fatty foods and instead go for a healthier option. What you eat and put in your body does have a direct correlation with how your skin will react. Take control of your skin and how you feel with a good nutrition and a healthy diet.

To protect our skin and eye lash hair we must only use the best natural mascara products. So many beauty products have toxic ingredients. It is so important that we use non toxic mascara. Mascara is so close to the eyes and can be so sensitive to the surrounding area. Mascara is such a crucial step in most makeup routines especially mine! There are many steps I could leave behind..but not mascara!

Why I Love Mascara

You can take my whole makeup bag–go ahead take it! Just leave me with my mascara. Mascara enhances the eye by defining the eyelashes. Simply pop on a little mascara, you are immediately transformed. Never underestimate the power of some of the best natural mascara products. Mascara can dark the eyelashes in shades of dark brown or black. It also lengthen and thickens the lashes giving them a fuller look. Many wear mascara on both the top and the bottom lashes to accentuate the eye and add a little drama. But if you are doing a natural makeup look, you can skip that step! Although mascara seems to be a modern beauty product, mascara has been around since the beginning of civilization.

Did the Egyptians Use Non Toxic Mascara?

Mascara dates back to the ancient Egyptians! There are records of mascara that date back to 4000 BC. In ancient Egypt, mascara was called kohl. They used kohl to darken their eyelashes, eyebrows, and eyelids. They believed by creating this mask, it would ward off evil spirits. There were many other ingredients that they used in kohl, from malachite (stone), galena (stone), charcoal, honey, water, even crocodile feces. Not quite the ingredients I would want in a best natural mascara. Thankfully we now have some of the best hypoallergenic mascaras out there!

How does hypoallegenic mascara help my eye lashes?

There are so many of us that have sensitivities to some products due to allergies. However, it is important to remember that just because a product says it is hypoallergenic, doesn’t mean you will not have an allergic reaction. The standards are not set by the FDA for them to make that statement and be able to back it up. So, it is important to be conscious of the ingredients and always read the ingredient label especially if you have sensitivities. Also, performing a test by applying the mascara to your arm or leg before use will help you determine if your skin will tolerate the product. Practicing a few techniques on mascara application, sanitation and product types will promote healthy looking eyelashes for many years to come.

Natural Mascara Tips: for healthy looking eye lashes

  1. Replace your mascara every 2-3 months. Set a reminder in your phone to keep you on schedule. You do not want to risk an eye infection because you didn’t replace your mascara, eyeliner, and other eye products. If the mascara dries out…do not add water, take that as a sign that it’s time for the mascara to be tossed.
  2. Don’t leave your makeup in the car! Heat exposure for an extended period of time can cause bacteria to grow. Plus you shouldn’t be doing your makeup in the car always…especially if you’re driving! Scratching your eye with the mascara wand is the number 1 cosmetics injury that could happen while driving.
  3. Sharing is caring…but do not share mascara or other items. That is how germs are spread…even if they are your best friend’s germs. It is better to not share mascara even if it is the best natural mascara out there. An eye infection is no joke!
  4. Mascara comes in different shades! Always use non toxic mascara, since you are so close to your eye. Choose the best natural mascara color for you – black, brown, clear!
  5. Start at the base of the eyelashes and swoop the mascara up, coating the lashes. It may take 2-3 passes to fully coat the eyelashes to your liking. By starting at the bottom, the lashes look more natural instead of spider like.
  6. Try using waterproof mascara! Maybe you are going somewhere and don’t want to worry about mascara running, waterproof mascara is the answer for you!

  7. Use a non toxic natural makeup remover to take off mascara. There are many that are so gentle on the eye area yet take off all the mascara.
  8. Apply mascara to clean lashes…that means removing your makeup each night.

This binding component allows for no fallout and easy removal so you don’t lose those precious lashes. Go Vegan, Get Extreme Volume, & Healthy Lashes Using KUSH High Volume Mascara….all you need is one hit!

Best Waterproof Natural Mascara

#1: BareMinerals Flawless Definition Waterproof Mascara

Finally a waterproof mascara that we can trust! BareMinerals really stepped the game up with their Flawless Definition Waterproof Mascara. Not only is it paraben free mascara, it is also sulfate free, free of synthetic fragrances dyes, no Phthalates, NON Gmo! Say goodbye to clumpy, spider lashes (personal pet peeve)!

Using this natural mascara, your lashes will be lengthened, beautiful, and will not smudge! This is An award winning waterproof mascara!

What about eyelash extensions? Or fake eyelashes?

Beware if you choose to do eyelash extensions. There are many dangers associated with eyelash extensions so it is important to know what you are getting into with one of those procedures. In order to bond the extension to your eyelid and other lashes, there is an adhesive that is used. There are some that experience an allergic reaction because of the adhesive.

You are at risk of a fungal or bacterial infection when you choose to do eyelash extensions. There are some that complain of irritation to their actual eye and cornea because of eyelash extensions. There also is a possibility that you could go blind due to the ingredients that are in the glues and adhesives used. They would be in extreme situations but it is not an impossible situation.

Plus there are so many rules with extensions…you can’t get them wet for the first 24 hours you get them so that means no shower, washing your face, crying, steam room, etc. What if you have a naturally watering eye….could pose a problem!

Why I Would Never Get Eyelash Extensions

At the end of the day I value my actual lashes too much to throw some imposter lashes on. I do not want to risk the chance of my actual lashes falling out or getting damaged. I love the look of natural lashes so I will always opt for one of the best natural mascara options instead of extensions or fake lashes.

There are some situations where there is temporary or PERMANENT loss of lashes….that to me would be so upsetting. It may sound vain, but mascara and natural eyelashes is the best combination for a natural makeup look. It really is incredible what popping on a little mascara can do to open and liven up the eyes.

We are all different so some may choose to get extensions, but it is up to them and their own decision making. However, that is not something I am willing to do and not willing to risk losing my lashes either temporarily or permanently.

Our skin needs to reboot while we sleep, it is one of the secrets to beautiful, glowing skin.

Look for Noncomedogenic cleansers to use when cleaning your skin. These forms of cleansers are important for almost all types of skin. The reason being is that they do not include the harsh chemicals that damage your skin and cause more pore clogging. Noncomedogenic makeup removers and cleansers use a mixture of glycerin and purified water to their solutions and typically never add fragrances and synthetics. Great things in life do not come easy, same thing goes with beautiful skin. You can’t just wish for beautiful skin, you have to work for it! #Work

An Organic Makeup Remover! Organic coconut oil is considered to be a anti-fungal, anti-bacterial, anti-microbial and has been know to heal and treat forms of dermatitis. Coconut oil has also been known to speed up the healing process by keeping the area hydrated and bacteria free. Coconut Oil is great when you have an acne breakout or if you have sensitive skin. Since it is an anti-inflammatory, it helps with redness and sensitivity. There are so many uses for coconut oil. It also works as a great evening moisturizer! Steps to use:

  1. Simply put on your face and eye area. It is a safe and natural eye makeup remover.
  2. Gently rub the area and remember to not pull your skin especially around the eye as it is very delicate and by pulling you can essentially cause wrinkles and signs of aging
  3. Use a soft towel to wipe away the excess and the leftover coconut oil. It is so easy!

Olive Oil

Head over to the pantry! Olive Oil is an incredible natural makeup remover and most of us have this ready to go in our kitchen! Olive Oil has literally been under our noses this whole time! Well the secret is out, olive oil is an organic makeup remover. Some may know how versatile olive oil is, but for those of you who do not know, it is as great natural makeup remover. Not only does it remove makeup safely, but also makes a great moisturizer that can be used all over the body. We put olive oil inside our bodies, so why not put it on our bodies?

Using olive oil as your makeup remover can have incredible benefits to your skin around your eyes. Olive oil contains 3 extremely potent antioxidants (polyphenols, phytosterols, vitamin E) that remove toxins from the skin and reduce the impact of skin damage chemical based makeup. Olive oil also has the ability to protect against ultra violet light that can cause free radical damage from too much exposure from the sun.

Grab another travel sized squeezable bottle with a lid and you can use that to hold your olive oil that you use for your beauty routine. You are on your way to natural radiant skin!

Jojoba Oil

Another incredible oil! This is often compared to Sweet Almond Oil, which we will touch on next! Jojoba Oil has natural antibacterial properties as well as anti inflammatory properties. It is as great natural makeup remover and also will help with acne and redness. If you are keen on DIY, you can use jojoba oil to make your own organic and natural soap at home! Homemade makeup removers are incredible because there are not that many ingredients and they are items that you can actually pronounce! Jojoba Oil is a great natural makeup remover for oily skin and many other skin types including sensitive skin.

Expert Tip: Use a cotton ball or swab to apply the jojoba oil to your face, it will make it so easy to apply! This way you also have control of the product and can easily wipe away your makeup. It’s so easy!

Sweet Almond Oil

This is a great organic makeup remover, it is so gentle and safe on the face and perfect for eye makeup removal. It is an all around amazing natural makeup remover. It is less known so it may not be readily available in your pantry, but is so easy to find and purchase for future usage. For those with sensitive skin, this is definitely an organic makeup remover that you should look into. It has very little smell or scent which is great. The almond oil is packed full of rich antioxidants, monounsaturated fatty acids, potassium and minerals.

To use: Using a cotton swab or cotton ball, apply the sweet almond oil to your face for a natural and homemade makeup remover.

Shea Butter

One of my favorite natural and organic ingredients! Shea butter is the number one ingredient I look for when it comes to moisturizers and body lotions. Not only is it an excellent moisturizer that leaves your skin absolutely quenched, but it also is a great natural eye makeup remover. No longer do you have to scrub and pull at your eyes using products like cold creams that is made with who knows what. The eyes are so sensitive! It is so important that we only use safe products near and on our eyes. The FDA doesn’t do anything when it comes to beauty regulation, so it’s is up to us to be aware. As my own mother says, “We have to stay WOKE.”

Expert Tip: It is best to first warm up the Shea butter in your fingertips first before applying to the eye. Take about a pea size of Shea butter and warm the product up between your fingers. Gently apply to the eye, without tugging, try a patting technique instead to remove your day’s eye makeup. Wipe away with a cotton swab and you are done!

Witch Hazel

Often found in our cosmetics cabinet already, many of us may already have witch hazel in our own homes! Yes! Talk about using what we have just laying around! It is important to use alcohol free witch hazel. Alcohol free is the best way to go so you do not dry out your skin. Witch Hazel has astringent properties that make it idea for natural makeup removing without skin irritating sythetic and harsh chemicals. The witch hazel not only removes your makeup but it also unclogs your pores.

Also, be careful of the eye area as witch hazel with alcohol will burn the eyes. I would not recommend this as a natural eye makeup remover, since the eye is so delicate and there are so many other great natural eye makeup removers that do not cause such irritation. This is however an amazing natural makeup remover for oily skin.

Expert Tip: Use a cotton ball or cotton swab to apply the alcohol free witch hazel to your face. It will be easier to apply and control this way.

Multi-Ingredient Homemade Makeup Removers

Witch Hazel + Water + Oil

These three ingredients combined make one amazing homemade makeup remover. It is also a natural makeup remover. It is perfect for traveling, a long flight, or road trip where you need a little skin refresher on the go. Expert tip: Combine 2 Tablespoons of Water, Alcohol Free Witch Hazel, & Oil (Olive Oil, Sweet Almond, Jojoba Oil but personally I prefer jojoba oil since it is hypoallergenic and a natural makeup remover for oily skin).

Shake it up before each use, since oil and water do not mix and tend to separate, you will need to give it a good shake before usage! Use a cotton ball or swab for easy application and to remove excess homemade makeup remover.

Equal Parts Witch Hazel & Jojoba Oil

Purchase alcohol free witch hazel for best results. The eye can be so sensitive so we really need to be careful and vigilant about what we put on our face and eye area. Jojoba oil is great by itself, but it also works great with equal parts witch hazel.

Aloe Vera and Raw Honey

In a small bowl, add equal parts aloe vera and raw honey. Then add 2 Tbsp of olive or hazelnut oil to the mix for every one cup of mixture. Use a blender to blend the ingredients together and store in a airtight container. To apply the cleanser, add a small scoop of the mixture and rub onto makeup for a few moments before rinsing with cold water.

Natural Makeup Remover Travel Tips!

You can even travel with your natural makeup removers. First purchase Travel Sized Squeezable Bottles with a Lid for each. These bottles seriously are the best invention ever when it comes to traveling. 3 oz or less are the rules for TSA so make sure you get the correct type of container. Using these, not only will they be TSA accepted but with a properly secured lid, you can take them anywhere without making a mess! Make sure your lid secures properly, you do not want to waste your homemade makeup remover due to a ill fitting lid!

Always check in and see how your skin is doing after implementing a new addition to your routine. Using natural makeup remover products is a great way to safely remove your makeup and also take care of your skin.

Is Tatcha Skincare Everything It’s Supposed To Be? Tatcha skincare is everywhere! Everywhere you look is another one of their products. This brand has so many types of skincare products. Tatcha skincare is taking over! But is this brand overhyped? Is Tatcha skincare everything it’s supposed to be…maybe even more? Let’s dig into this illustrious and highly demanded skincare brand and see what is the real tea!

How Did Tatcha Skincare Come To Be?

The CEO and founder of Tatcha is a woman named Victoria Tsai. Before starting the skincare company that is based entirely on Japanese traditions, Victoria Tsai actually worked for Merrill Lynch in the World Financial Center. But on 9/11, everything changed. Victoria’s work office was just across the street from what once was the Twin Towers. We all know the tragedy that occurred that day from the news channels, newspapers, and reports. Victoria Tsai saw it all first hand. The tragedy of that day and the stresses after ignited the fire within Victoria to go back to business school. Eventually she was able to get a job which created and launched beauty products in China.

Using herself as a model and testing many products herself, Victoria ended up suffering from acute dermatitis. Acute dermatitis for those who are not familiar is an extremely painful, blistering, red rash.

All from using beauty products! We often forget that the skin is the largest organ humans have. Our skin is neglected the most! Over 60% of what we put on our skin, passes into our body. Many ingredients like Sulfates, Phthalates, and parabens not only permeate the body, but store themselves in skin tissues.

Victoria researched treatments for her condition but found no reprieve. In fact, it only got worse! The FDA believes that many of these ingredients (including the ones that caused her condition) are not dangerous. Just like the criminal system…the ingredients are innocent until proven guilty. There is no regulation and these ingredients are not harmless. They are actually harmful and who knows who else have fallen victim to these chemicals because they are in beauty products.

Since the current beauty and cosmetics industry had failed her….Victoria Tsai sought out for more. Who knows who else has been failed by faulty products and harmful ingredients that are inside our daily beauty routines.

Natural Makeup Inspiration – Back to Basics

On a trip to Japan, Victoria was inspired. She was inspired by the history, the culture, and the Geishas. Hollywood has given us a misconstrued interpretation of Geishas. Some believe that they were promiscuous, but that is not the truth. Those are inaccurate tales and accounts that have tarnished and taken away the real beauty of what Geishas were and are to this day. The term Geisha means art person. In Japan, they were the female actors in Kabuki and we’re practically considered sacred.

In Kyoto, Japan, Victoria was able to have her first encounter with a real Geisha. Kyoto is the center of all Geisha tradition in Japan. The first thing she noticed was the Geishas skin, luminous and perfect skin. Even with the white stage makeup, there was something so incredibly special about the smooth, elegant, clear skin. All of the traditions for over 300 years have been passed down orally. There was no written details of what to do, it was merely passed down verbally, generation after generation.

Eventually, Victoria did find a book…a Japanese Beauty Guide in a sense that was written over 200 years ago. This reference guide became her holy grail…after it had been translated of course!

The main point was clear: what one puts in their bodies, one puts on their skin. Such a simple rule, but the results are abundantly clear. Keep it Simple.

The Simple Ingredients Are:

Japanese Wild Roses

Abaca Leaf

Green Tea

Red Algae

Seaweed

Rice Bran

Oatmeal

What Happened Next for Tatcha Skincare

Kyoto left Victoria completely inspired, shook to her core. We are always taught, new is better and to leave the past behind. But Kyoto taught her something different. She was shown to break the expectations of what normal Western society wants and what we are told is safe. She was shown to go back to basics…to revisit a time when things were a little more simple and pure. It took three years to find out exactly what the Geishas skin secrets were.

Victoria’s first product she launched were blotting papers. The blotting papers were simple, exactly the same thin papers that Geishas once used made from abaca leaves. However, the product didn’t take off as quickly as she first expected. But now, not only does she have the blotting papers but countless other Tatcha skincare products. It really is quite incredible how she has turned her small little website with only a few purchases from family and friends, to an impressive beauty empire.

Where is Tatcha Skincare Brand Headquartered?

Victoria splits time between San Francisco, CA, Bay Area and Japan. So much has changed from her financial gig, now she travels regularly to Japan working with researchers to create new, modern products with for the modern Geisha in all of us.

What is So Special About Tatcha Skincare Products

All of Tatcha skincare products are full of incredible antioxidants and are great non-damaging skincare products. These come from the ingredients: red algae, green tea, and rice bran. They are free of Phthalates, Parabens, and Sulfates making Tatcha Skincare products perfect for all skin types, including sensitive skin.

Tatcha Skincare is the answer we are looking for when it comes to the right skincare routine. Victoria continues to work directly with an extremely talented team that helps her handcraft each new product. The attention to detail is incredible! Is there a downside with Tatcha Skincare?

The price tag for some of Tatcha Skincare products are not exactly cheap. Most of the products will not exactly be considered affordable for some. Feeling guilty about splurging on healthy skincare for yourself? Don’t be! Tatcha gives back to the community with each full size purchase! Tatcha believes in giving back to the community! For every purchase of a full-sized Tatcha skincare product, it funds a day of school for girls. Through Beautiful Faces, Beautiful Futures partnership with Tatcha and Room to Read, your purchase helps fund schooling for girls in Africa and Asia. It is a great thing to know that there is a beauty brand that truly cares about giving back and does so with every full-sized purchase.

But the price tag…

Still weary? It is true that many of the items for Tatcha are not drug store prices. In fact, most of the products are considered expensive for some. A life lesson and statement my father always tells me is “You pay for what you get.” What that means is…if you buy something cheap to save a buck..guess what you are going to get something cheap. Sulfate, Parabens, Phthalates, and other harmful ingredients are cheap ingredients and are in cheap moisturizers and beauty products. Yes, they are moisturizers and other skincare products available that are cheaper, but they also are often made with harmful ingredients.

Somethings are worth the splurge! Skincare is one of those things. So to spend a bit more on something that is pure, non irritating, and safe is worth it. You are worth it! Trust me, your skin will thank you in the long haul. Our skin is the largest organ in the body, whatever we put on it, does get absorbed into the body. So the real question…

How much do you value yourself? Self Love is not selfish…you deserve to have radiant, youthful, glowing skin everyday!

What exactly are phthalates? How do you even pronounce the word? Why are phthalates in cosmetics? Besides behind hard to pronounce, phthalates are chemical compounds. Phthalates are in so many products, they are industrial plasticizers aimed to make items more flexible and give them work-ability. The most common beauty products they are found in are moisturizers and nail polish. They are found in so many plastic products that we use everyday.

phthalates-in-cosmetics

Other Common Products Include:

  • Hair Spray
  • Aftershave Lotion
  • Deodorant
  • Lotion
  • Shampoo
  • Conditioner
  • Perfumes
  • Mascara
  • Foundation
  • Makeup removers

Phthalates are also found in things like:

  • Vinyl Flooring
  • Carpet
  • Insect Repellant
  • Plastic Toys – Exposure to phthalates from day one
  • Medical Devices – IV bags & plastic tubing
  • Plastic Wrap
  • Car Seats
  • Wallpaper

How Many Types of Phthalates in Cosmetics are Used?

There are many types of phthalates! They are a group of chemicals! The primary one that is found in cosmetics is DBP or dibutylphthalate. Try saying that 5x fast! Also popular is dimethylphthalate or DMP. There is also Di-2-ethylhexylphthalate or DEHP which is found in eyelash glue. Lastly, is DEP or diethylphthalate.

DBP is found in items like nail polish which work to reduce the product from cracking. DBP is a plasticizer in products so it works to make them less brittle. DMP is found in products like hairspray. DMP allows the flexible hold that we look for in hairsprays. DEP is found in fragrances and perfumes. There were many types of phthalates in cosmetics that were once used. DEP is the last phthalate being used in cosmetics products. That were told at least…there is a lot of information and lack of regulation when it comes to the cosmetics and beauty industry.

What are the Effects of Phthalates?

There is some debate when it comes to the effects of phthalates in cosmetics and phthalates in general have on the human body. The National Toxicology Program or NTP state that phthalates cause little to no reproductive risks in most cases. In the EU, DBP which is found in nail polish is listed as an endocrine disrupting compound. The endocrine system are all the glands that secrete hormones to the body and to the bloodstream. The endocrine system is linked to all the major organs in the body.

Did you know we are all exposed to phthalates?

Phthalates are found in human urine. In a study that was done, phthalates were found in all of the samples. This is due to the phthalates in cosmetics and other fragranced products that we use every day on our faces and our entire bodies. They are in the products we put on ourselves and our families. Phthalates are in the things we eat! Pregnant women exposed to phthalates experienced babies with genital development defects. The baby boys were all exposed to phthalates when they were nursing. There were phthalates on the skin of their mothers and also in the breast milk.

DEHP and DBP can be toxic to reproduction system!

Not only do they affect sperm levels, but phthalates also caused infertility in men. Men experienced much lower sperm levels. Women exposed to phthalates did see irregularities to their levels in sex hormones. These irregularities mess up the development and functionality of breasts and other sex organs. Both hormone levels of men and women are affected by phthalates.

DEHP is a carcinogen!

DEHP is a cancerous to humans. This has been confirmed by both the National Toxicology Program and the US Environmental Protection Agency. DBP encourages the growth of breast tumor cells. DBP makes anti-estrogen treatments not as effective against tumors. It is extremely vital that pregnant women and breastfeeding mothers are extremely vulnerable to phthalates. It is best for pregnant and breastfeeding mothers to avoid phthalates in cosmetics.

Do any countries ban phthalates in cosmetics?

Not the USA! The United States still uses phthalates in cosmetics products. However, in the European Union, things are different! The European Union are regulating phthalates in cosmetics. They have banned DBP and DEHP from being used in cosmetics. The USA and the FDA do not yet recognize the dangers of phthalates in cosmetics. They are dangerous and cause serious damage to the lungs, kidneys, reproductive system, and liver. The FDA still believes that low quantities/limited exposure is not dangerous, but that is not 100% correct.

phthalates-in-food

How to Avoid Phthalates in Cosmetics.

Read Your Labels Hunny! Awareness is everything and we need to read the ingredients in our food and cosmetics products. It is important to read the labels especially on things like nail polish and other nail products. Some companies may use phthalate-free on their product label but if something called “fragrance” is used, then it indeed has phthalates. Avoid products that have “fragrance” listed as an ingredient, it is important to limit our exposure to phthalates in cosmetics and other products.

Thankfully many companies are offering phthalates free products. They also paraben free and sulfate free products.

Tips & Tricks to Avoid Phthalates

  • Avoid plastic! And never heat your food in a plastic container. This may be the hardest thing to break due to our addiction to plastic containers, ziplocs, the container store! Try getting a glass storage container instead. Other great materials for food storage are stainless steel and silicone.
  • Avoid older plastic toys! Before 2009, several types of phthalates were unregulated and were in many plastic toys…especially soft toys. These would be items perfect for children, like bottles, feeding items, teething rings, toys. Now
  • Avoid products with fragrance listed! Parfum, Fragrance…all mean phthalates. Instead, look for phthalate-free, no synthetic fragrances, or made using essential oils as an alternative.
  • Get a Nano-Filtration System to filter your water! The normal charcoal water can still find traces of DEHP. DEHP is found in water due to the phthalates that are in the water pipes. This water filter would help to filter out phthalates and would be a much safer way to drink at home filtered water.
  • Be aware of the type of Plastic Bottles you use! Only Use plastic with the following recycling codes: 1,2, 5. Avoid recycling codes 3 and 7, they have phthalates. The goal is to limit exposure!
  • Go Organic! Phthalates are in pesticides, so by eating organic certified produce, meat, and dairy products you get only the best! Organic certified products do not allow any pesticides or animals fed pesticide treated food. It is also better for you to eat organic!
  • Use phthalate-free products! Read the label, use products that are listed as phthalate- free only!

phthalates-sources

The Breakdown on Phthalates in Cosmetics

The USA doesn’t see the dangers of these ingredients like other countries like the European Union. Phthalates are dangerous and cancerous. It is best to avoid items that include phthalates in them. Pregnant and nursing mother’s should avoid exposure to phthalates. Limit as much exposure as possible! There has also been some speculation that Phthalates can cause acne breakouts and could be the quite cause of your sensitive skin and pimples. If you are prone to acne I have developed a great guide on natural products that reduce acne breakouts found here.

Awareness is key! As consumers we deserve to know that what we are using is safe!

]]>
Not all beauty products are created equal. Not all makeup is makeup that is good for your skin. In this day and age, we as consumers are becoming more and more increasing aware of what we put into our bodies and what we put on our bodies. Don’t we all want makeup that is good for your skin? The answer is yes! Unfortunately not all makeup is considered makeup that is good for your skin. Studies have begun to show the negative effects a wide variety of chemicals that are used in our everyday beauty products such as Sulfates, Phthalates and Parabens. So what ingredients are bad? What ingredients are harmless and which are harmful makeup ingredients?

Awareness is increasing in skincare and beauty. You do not have to be a trained professional or dermatologist to recognize the word paraben. Parabens have been moved to the danger list…but what do we really know about parabens. The recent fad has been No Parabens…but what exactly are in the products if Parabens are removed. What are Parabens? Why are they included in cosmetics in the first place? Do they do harm or are these products with Parabens included considered makeup that is good for your skin.

natural-makeup-look

What are Parabens?

Unfortunately I do not think most would be able to state what exactly is a paraben. We have all been swept up in the fad of excluding Parabens without actually knowing what they are.

Parabens are a preservative! Yes they are a type of preservative that was initially introduced in the 1950s. The main purpose of Parabens is to ensure a long product shelf life. Many cosmetics products use Parabens to prevent mold and bacteria to grow. About 85% of all makeup products have Parabens in them. That is a pretty astounding figure. Parabens are cheap and effective, meaning that they are meant to preserve products and they do. Parabens are chemicals, each with distinct molecular structure.

If you are perusing the labels on your favorite beauty products, you can look for these common AKAs. Usually products have a combo of a few Parabens that they use a little cocktail to preserve their product. They do so to cover all bases with the many microorganisms that exist to prevent mold and bacteria growing.

Common Names for Parabens include:

  • Butylparaben
  • Methylparaben
  • Ethylparaben
  • Propylparaben
  • Isobutylparabel
  • Isopropylparaben

*Basically if it ends in -Paraben…ITS A PARABEN

What type of cosmetics/makeup have Parabens?

Where to start! Parabens are found in so many cosmetics…and foods and drugs!

Common places include:

  • Moisturizers
  • Lotions/Skin Care
  • Makeup/Cosmetics
  • Facial & Shower Cleansers/Scrubs
  • Makeup removers
  • Hair Care Products like shampoos and conditioners
  • Shaving Creams/Products
  • Mascara
  • Foundations

organic-foundation

How did Parabens get the bad reputation and why are they good for your skin?

Parabens extend the shelf life of the cosmetics products we own. This we know. Have you ever looked at your lipstick, eyeshadow, or favorite foundation? Some of these items have a shelf life of 12 months or more! This is due to Parabens. However once you apply these products to your face and skin, you are also letting the Parabens into your skin. Once Parabens enter the skin they can enter the tissues of the body and remain there…living on within you.

Parabens have been linked to breast cancer and reproductive issues. They allegedly disrupt hormone functions causing too much estrogen which causes tumor growth.

In 2004, cancer researchers found Parabens in malignant breast tumors proving again that Parabens are linked to breast cancer. Researchers found Parabens in 19 of the 20 breast tumors of the women that were studied. The studies showed that the Parabens were intact, showing that even after the body metabolized the paraben, it did not break it down.

Due to these findings in the 1990s and in the early 200s, many countries felt it wise to put limits on paraben amounts in products. However, they are still being used!

The real danger is that Parabens store themselves in the body. It is the dangers over time that pose the biggest health risks for us.

Yet the US Food & Drug Administration still consider Parabens safe at low levels. Parabens disrupt the endocrine system, they are chemicals that are easily absorbed into the body through the skin, blood, and digestive tract.

Studies have shown that nearly all US adults have Parabens in their system. In one study, they found that adult females and adolescents had the highest levels of Parabens in their urine verses males of similar age.

Are Cosmetics Regulated? Does the FDA even care?

Nope! There are no rules that apply to preservatives in cosmetics. No specific or unique or special rules or regulations. Other than color additives, the FDA does not need to approve any ingredients or products before they hit market. Wow, that is frightening. Under the Federal Food, Drug, & Cosmetics Act, cosmetic ingredients and products do not need approval of the FDA before being sold to consumers. The only rule besides color additives, is that the instructions on the product must be safe. This means that the product must be labeled correctly with proper directions. So if it says only use a pea size, it may be best to follow the directions because who knows what could happen to you if you use more than the specified amount.

Parabens Affect the Environment!

Unfortunately the actions of humans and human kind continue to negatively affect the environment. Parabens are not just bad for humans and not our bodies…but also extremely bad for the environment. Parabens have contaminated the sewage system, going into the water, and affecting the environment as a result. It is believed that when we wash these products down the drain, they contaminate the earth. Parabens are being found in animals that they were never found in before and this is due to human error and cause.

How to Choose Makeup that is Good for Your Skin

First it all begins with awareness. We are becoming more and more aware of what we put in our bodies as well as what we put on our skin. Parabens are cheap..hence why they are so readily found in products. Thankfully, Brands are stepping up and providing new, synthetic free products. These products work just as effectively so there is no longer a need to use products with Parabens and other artificial preservatives.

Be mindful! Be mindful of what you put on your skin. For body lotions or products that are used all over the body, reach for a paraben-free product. Try using oil based organic makeup that is good for your skin. Oil based meaning something like coconut oil/palm oil or a similar naturally derived ingredient. Avoid products where the main ingredient is water as that will need a preservative like a paraben. There are many safe, parabens free brands that have stepped up and created great products. You can also find organic makeup removers that are free of parabens and other harsh chemicals. Some of the most effective makeup removers use natural oils to remove makeup and leave the skin rejuvenated and protected from environmental stress. You can check out our favorite cleansing oil here.

What we put on our face is so important! Before options were limited to quality products that were natural and safe. Now there are great natural foundation for face in many shade ranges. You deserve to use quality products in your daily routine. Foundation is so important, many use foundation on their faces daily. Think of foundation as the canvas to your next masterpiece! Makeup is truly an art form, as artists we deserve the best products.

Harmful makeup ingredients in everyday foundation.

It is important that when we pick foundations that we pick those without the harmful makeup ingredients such as sulfates, phthalates, parabens and even formaldehyde. Our skin is the largest organ in the human body. It absorbs everything we consciously put on it. It also absorbs everything in our environment that we may not want absorbed into our skin. For years, the cosmetics industry has gone unregulated, allowing brands to put whatever they want in their products. True toxins like parabens and formaldehyde often included in makeup. These additives have been in makeup for years without a second thought. However, times are changing! We are becoming more consciously aware of what we put in and on our bodies and positive effects that we get when we choose natural cosmetics. We want better products and we deserve them!

natural-foundation-look

How to Choose the Right Natural Foundation for Face

Everyone is different! That’s what makes us all so interesting and also provides a challenge for makeup companies. There are many different type of skin types, textures, tones, skin concerns, etc. There is really something out there for everyone. Foundations can be matte, dewy, or combo of both. They can be full coverage or medium buildable coverage. Often natural foundation for face are medium, buildable coverage…your skin but better!

For those that want an even lighter look, like they aren’t wearing anything..perhaps a BB or CC cream would work best. Those types of products provide the SPF that some are looking for and also light coverage. Perfect for a beach day or a day outside!

The finish and type of foundation depends on your preference and the type of look you are going for.

For Dry Skin: Perhaps a more Dewy, Luminous, Glow Intended product would work for you

For Oily Skin/Combo Skin: Matte Finish would probably work best since foundations that are more dewy might not wear the way you wish. When I say this I refer to, as the day goes by, you may get a bit shiny in the areas that you do not want…your forehead, nose, chin, etc.

Once you decide the type of foundation you are interested in, next is to find the correct shade. Nothing is more important than choosing the correct foundation shade. Shade range is so important! We are all so different with different undertones. Many companies are stepping up and providing a better standard in shade range. However, there are many companies that are behind the times and still do not offer enough shades. Brands need to continue to push themselves to be inclusive and provide options! It no longer is acceptable to exclude any group of individuals.

organic-foundation

Important things to remember when choosing a foundation:

  1. Type of Finish – What is your skin type? What kind of look are you going for – Day? Day to Night? Full Coverage Queen?
  2. Foundation Shade – We often are tanner in the summer months, than in the winter months. Most have to find their Winter Foundation and then a Summer Foundation shade. Does the company you are interested in purchasing from even have shade options for you?

Which Tools Recommended For Natural Foundation For Face?

It really is up to you! Your very own preference! There are many options for foundation application from your hands/fingers to sponges to brushes. There are many options that are readily available for foundation application.

Which Tools Can Be Used?

  1. Beauty Blender or similar sponge product – I love Beauty Blender but if I don’t want to splurge on their sponge, there are more affordable sponge sets available on Amazon that all get the job done!

  2. Synthetic Brush – Many companies have come out with their own makeup brushes using synthetic or animal hair. As my own personal preference, I will never use an animal hair brush. I prefer my brushes to be synthetic as natural hair brushes would soak up cream/liquid products like natural foundation for face. Think about your own hair when you shower or jump in the pool/get it wet. It is soaked through and through! It absorbs all the water. That would be the same situation with an animal hair brush. It would completely absorb all the product which causes you to use more.

  3. Fingers/Hand – Not my favorite option or choice but sometimes if you forget your tools, you have to be handy!

This product is vegan, cruelty-free, and formulated without gluten, GMO, synthetic fragrance, and formaldehyde. This product uses color-match technology, there are 3 shades.

The Holy Grail Steps to Put On Natural Foundation

  1. Start with a clean canvas! Remove any makeup and wash your face to remove any leftover makeup, oils, and dirt. Afterwards, try using a cleansing water which will help prep your skin for the following steps. Make sure your face is nice and clean before you moisturize. It is important to also use makeup removers and cleansers that contain only natural and organic ingredients.
  2. Grab your go to Moisturizer, a great one is Josie Maran Whipped Argan Oil Face Butter. This moisturizer is vegan, gluten-free, cruelty-free, and recycles its packaging. It goes on to your skin so smoothly and it is ultra moisturizing. It also is very light feeling on the skin so it goes great under your natural foundation for face. A great trick is to warm the product up between your fingertips before you put it on. Press the face butter gently into your skin, try not to pull the skin on your face…especially around the eyes is so delicate! The face butter is going to act also as the primer, this step is priming your skin for the foundation application. Don’t forget to moisturize your neck…people neglect their neck for some reason
  3. Get your beauty blender or egg like shaped sponge. You will need to dampen your sponge. By doing so, the sponge will soak up practically no product. Using the sponge allows you to really blend around the nose and eyes.
  4. Pick your favorite natural foundation that has a great formula, feels weightless on the skin, and looks like your skin but better! Starting from the center of the face, apply the foundation using the damp blender, blending outwards. Try not to have a heavy hand with the foundation, less is more. You can always build coverage if needed without getting a cakey look. For a more natural foundation on face, keep blending and pressing the makeup into the skin with your beauty sponge. Don’t forget to blend into the neck for a more complete look.
  5. Next we will conceal any redness, blemishes, and dark under eye circles. A great concealer is Hourglass Veil Retouching Fluid. It provides amazing coverage, while brightening and hydrating the under eye. For this concealer, sometimes I find it best to use my fingers to blend it out by gently tapping my middle or ring finger.
  6. Let’s set it and forget it! Using just a bit of Hourglass Veil Translucent Setting Powder, use gentle sweeps for the under eye and any particular areas that get shiny. Its best to set the forehead and between your eyes, the chin, down your nose. Just don’t over do it! Light hand with just a bit of powder
  7. Add back a little moisture to the face with a spritz of a face mist like Lilah B Aglow Face Mist. It is lightweight and natural face mist that brings back the natural glow of your natural foundation for face.

Although foundation is an essential element to skin care and beauty, there are other products that also contain damaging toxins and chemicals. I have developed a full guide on the best organic skin care products and brands you can find here.

We all are so weary about sulfates. We care so much about harmful makeup ingredients like sulfates, phthalates, and parabens. But do we even understand what they are and what they do? There has to be a reason why they were first introduced into makeup and beauty products in the first place. Cosmetics and beauty manufacturing companies wouldn’t put dangerous chemicals in the items we put on our skin, right? Or would they….

What are sulfates?

First let’s dig into what sulfates actually are to see if they are harmful makeup ingredients or not. We worry so much about things being sulfate free but besides the notion that they are considered harmful makeup ingredients, not too many really know what exactly they are.

Sulfates were first introduced in the 1930s, when they were added to household products….household cleaning products.

The many types of sulfates:

  • Sodium Lauryl Sulfate also known as SLS
  • Ammonium Lauryl Sulfate
  • Sodium Laureth Ether Sulfate / Sodium Laureth Sulfate also known as SLES

The two most popular sulfates are SLS and SLES. Sulfates are extremely strong, deep cleaning detergents. One of the most common is SLS or Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, which is an extremely popular and common chemical lather. The purpose of sulfates is bubbles! Sulfates are added to products so that when used with can lather up and create the bubbles which “clean” or remove the dirt and oil that is on our skin and hair.

We associate things being clean with the lather…the bubbles!

sulfate-free-shampoo

If a product like a shampoo doesn’t lather up, we immediately assume our hair is not clean. Same thing with the product we wash our faces with. We expect bubble, the lather…without that we don’t feel like the product works.

Sulfates were not originally meant to be placed in our cosmetics and beauty products. As stated earlier, Sulfates were introduced for cleaning products. They were first introduced to beauty and cosmetics industry in the 1950s.

They were not meant for the usages we have now like:

  • Body Care products
  • Soaps
  • Lotions
  • Toothpaste
  • Facial Cleansers
  • Shampoo and other hair care products

Sulfates were not meant to be exposed to our skin on a daily basis. SLS or sodium Lauryl sulfate is a degreaser. It is most commonly found in toothpaste products, leaving us with the “clean” sensation that we crave. We brush our teeth or wash our faces until we have the foam or bubbles that we are aiming for. Again, because we associate bubbles, the lather, the foam with being clean and getting clean. Yet our original question remains unanswered…are sulfates considered harmful makeup ingredients?

sulfate-free-definition

Why would makeup brands use sulfates if they may be harmful makeup ingredients?

First off, sulfate are cheap! Who doesn’t like to save a buck? Sulfates are abundantly available and companies have easy access to them. Sulfates are one of the most widely used chemical products in the USA. They are used for the bubbles!! People want to see the lather…doesn’t matter if they are washing their faces, their bodies, the dishes, or their car…if there’s no bubbles it must not be clean.

That’s the mentality that most have at least…and this mentality could be dangerous…

Are sulfates considered harmful makeup ingredients?

Sulfates are skin irritants. They are a major skin irritant. Not to mention eye irritation! This is the biggest issue with Sulfates…they are skin and eye irritants While we think these bubbles are cleaning our faces and we are doing such a great job washing ourselves with these glorious, fluffy bubbles, we actually are doing a lot of harm.

By using these products with sulfates, we are breaking down the protective barriers that our skin and hair have in place. The sulfates strips our hair and skin down, causing damage the balance and health of our skin and hair. Both the skin and hair have natural oils and natural moisture. Sulfates breaks these natural occurring moisture so, causing skin and hair to dry out. Sulfates also can cause acne in the areas that they have frequent contact with.

For example, a face wash you use daily could end up causing you acne and acne scars.

SLS easily is able to enter the blood stream through the dermal layers, destroying everything that makes the skin have a natural glow. Sulfates not only dry out the skin and hair, but makes them dull and unnatural. Sulfates are simply pulling out too many natural oils, leaving you behind dry, brittle, and irritated. Even makeup removers can contain this toxic chemical and leach into your skin and cause potentially long term damage.

makeup-harmful-to-skin

What are the negative effects to the body when using harmful makeup ingredients?

It is not just our exteriors that are damaged when we use sulfates. Our hair and skin are damaged on the exterior but what is happening inside our bodies is even more frightening. SLS penetrates the body through the bloodstream which is basically a super airport to every organ in the human body. Over time, SLS is found in the tissues of many vital organs like the brain, heart, liver. The chemicals also have been known to cause irritation in the eyes and mouth. Cases have reported with long term use and exposure, can cause hair loss, vision problems, and issues with the mouth and gums.

Debunking the Myths about Sulfates – Are they Good or Bad?

We do not know if products without Sulfates are better cleansers or cleaning products. No research has shown that one is better than the other. There is no theoretical proof showing one has more harmful makeup ingredients than the other does. It is important to remember, that if a product is claiming it is sulfate-free, there will be other detergents or cleaning agents added. Many of these sulfate-free products do have their cleaning agents derived from natural products and essential oils. However, some are produced by synthetic materials. It is still very much a consumer beware industry, as many things are not regulated in the cosmetics and beauty industry. It is true that sulfates can be very drying to the face and hair. Also, many develop sensitivities like sensitive skin for example.

sulfate-hair-color

Do Hair Care Products With Sulfates Hurt Hair Coloring?

That is a myth. It is a complete myth that using a shampoo product with Sulfates will strip the hair color. In fact, it does no more harm than any other shampoo product.

But are they dangerous? Are sulfates harmful makeup ingredients?

Beside skin and eye irritation and perhaps some acne…no they are not dangerous. Sulfates do not cause cancer, that was proven in 1998 by the American Cancer Society. They were able to debunk the myth that Sulfates caused cancer. Sulfates are okay to use on the skin for brief periods of time only. This could be like a cleanser that you would rinse off shortly after application. It is not recommended for Sulfates to be left on the skin for extended periods of time as studies showed the irritation came after prolonged contact to skin.

But…yes of course there is always a but. The way that SLES is manufactured can potentially contaminate the ingredient with something called 1,4-dioxane. The Environmental Protection Agency advise that 1,4-dioxane is carcinogenic. Carcinogenic means cancer causing. SLS is not manufactured the same way however. So not all Sulfates are created equal.

Are there more types of sulfates?

There are other Sulfates that exist..just because a product states that it is sulfate free…doesn’t mean that it is completely free of sulfates. When a brand states that their product is free of sulfates, they usually mean alkyl Sulfates like SLS and SLES. Like was stated earlier, not all Sulfates are created equal. Sulfates are still used inn shampoos and conditioners and other like products, but they are not the alkyl sulfate like SLS and SLES. Sulfates are needed in products and can actually help reduce breaking and make the skin/hair softer. Often if a company claims they are sulfate free, they are usually talking about SLS or SLES. Some companies swap those two with sodium coco sulfate which at the end of the day is still a sulfate.

Products That Contain Sulfates:

I have discovered a wide variety of products that contain sulfates that you should aware to prevent further exposure. Some of our most common everyday skin and beauty products that contain sulfates are:

  • Shampoo
  • Conditioner
  • Body Wash
  • Hand Soap
  • Face Wash
  • Toothpaste
  • Moisturizer

Sulfates act a wonderful inexpensive foaming and oil cutting agent that many beauty manufacturer use to enhance the performance of their product. Unfortunately, the studies are beginning to show the negative affects that sulfates have on humans with long term exposure.

Are there any products that offer non Sulfates?

Yes! It is not a myth, it is possible for a product to be completely sulfate free and have non Sulfates. These products do work and will clean the body or the face, but will not have that lather or foam that we are used to. Many companies are using different oils to replace SLS to help with the cleaning process, these oils include:

  • Coconut Oil
  • Olive Oil
  • Palm Oil

Some alternatives to Sulfates are:

  • Glycosides
  • Isethionates
  • Betaines

Isethionates and Betaines are alternatives to Sulfates, they are very mild on the skin and do provide that lather and bubbles that we look for. Another alternative to Sulfates is something called glycosides which is a sugar based cleaning agent and nontoxic in all forms. However, if you are allergic, this still could cause skin irritation. But that is something you should always be aware of if you have allergies. But without risk of exposure to carcinogens or eye and skin irritation.

Now that you are aware of the dangers associated with sulfates, it is important to use all natural and organic skin care products. For generations people all over the world have used naturally derived skin care ingredients to promote healthy and vibrant skin. Various plant based products that contain potent antioxidants, proteins, amino acids and phytonutrients can be found from your very own home of local market. You can see our post here reviewing and explaining the benefits of these incredible compounds.

If you’re looking for natural skin care products, brands and reviews you can find our full guide here.

Is beauty really skin deep? If so what does your skin say about you? Our skin is extremely important. It is with us forever and it can really make or break your makeup routine. We have mistreated our bodies and skin for so long but it doesn’t have to be that way. Start today using natural skin care products!

Natural skin care products need to be apart of your daily routine. There are so many great natural skin care companies out there that provide organic, natural skin care and makeup products. Natural skin care is so important. Skin care in general should be on everyone’s highest priority. Unfortunately, it is not always that way. So many, including myself, are guilty of forgetting to start their day with a good moisturizer.

Change your habit and start your day off right and reach for a natural skin care moisturizer.

There are many types of skin types out there. Some suffer from oily skin, dry skin, or maybe combination skin. No matter the skin type, it is so important that before you start your daily makeup routine, you must moisturize. Your skin will thank you in the long haul! An important question to ask yourself is…

natural-moisturizer-for-oily-skin

Do you moisturize your skin every day?

If you answered yes, good job! If you answered no, you should start working on moisturizing daily…Today! The skin is the largest organ in our complex system and we must take care of it! Men and Women can both benefit from moisturizing their skin and using a great natural skin care lotion. Everyone has skin and everyone deserves to have their very best skin. We deserve to put only the best natural skin care products on our bodies. There are so many benefits to moisturizing daily, it really is unbelievable.

Moisturizers help:

  • Anti Aging – Prevent Wrinkles
  • Softer Skin
  • Skin elasticity, More Elastic Skin – Youthful
  • Hydration
  • Natural Glow

Moisturizer Musts!

Remember when applying moisturizers and lotions to the face, be careful not to pull the skin. Don’t forget your neck! Often people neglect applying moisturizer to their necks. This is a huge mistake! The neck skin is just as delicate and can show signs wrinkles and age over time. It is important to apply moisturizers down the neck, to the collar bones, ending at the top of the chest. It is great to do this after a shower or after you wash your face in the morning. If you are someone who works outside or perhaps will be in the sun, reach for a moisturizer with SPF. There are many natural skin care products with SPF.

Find Your Skin’s Oil Balance with Natural Skin Care

There are so many great natural, organic brands that provide moisturizers that there really is something for everyone. I love oil free products so the items listed below all do have something in common…they are oil free! Our skin naturally produces oil…sometimes too much which is the cause of acne. Clogged pores are the worst! By using an oil free natural skin care moisturizer, it will help to balance the hydration we need for our skin, without making it greasy, oily with an overproduction of oils.

What are the benefits of oil free products?

  1. Less Oil! If you have oily skin or combination skin, this is a no brainer. Always use oil free natural skin care products! Oil free is the way to go for natural makeup. Look into buying products that are labeled non comedogenic. You can see our post on what non comedogenic means.
  2. Oil Free = No Clogged Pores. Clogged pores equates to pimples which aren’t a good thing for anyone at any age.
  3. Oil Free Skin Care Protects Your Skin. Not only will it help with your complexion, but also helps with all of the harmful aging UV rays from the sun. Oil free products provide protection from harmful free radicals which can cause our skin to get damaged over time.

What Kind of Ingredients Should You Look For?

There are many natural skin care brands out there which provide many amazing products. There are some great ingredients that have proven to be extremely effective in skin protection, help with anti aging, and provide antioxidants to combat free radicals.

The ingredients you should look for are:

  • Vitamin C
  • Vitamin E
  • Aloe Vera
  • Green Tea

What Ingredients To Avoid For Natural Skin Care

The products listed below will be sulfate free, paraben free, and free of formaldehyde. What exactly is a sulfate and why do we care if it is in our skin care? They are extremely strong detergents made of sulfur! Products with sulfates can cause irritation in the skin causing acne. Also, causes irritation in the eye, mouth, and lungs. Parabens are extremely dangerous preservatives that are put in cosmetics and beauty products. Parabens can be very harmful to your body, especially affecting the reproductive area and possibly cancer. Formaldehyde is used as a preservative in cosmetics so that your products do not get moldy and grow bacteria. Unfortunately, formaldehyde causes cancer and also causes respiratory issues. Formaldehyde is extremely toxic! Another chemical I found to be potentially toxic to the human body are Phthalates that can cause damage to your reproductive system and cause complications during the pregnancy and nursing.

Origins Zero Oil Oil Free Moisture Lotion

Origins is an incredible natural skin care brand that provides products free of sulfates, parabens, and formaldehyde. It is so important, as consumers that we are aware of the ingredients inside of our skincare and makeup products. Origins Zero Oil is not greasy at all, it is very lightweight, oil free. It works to reduce shine meanwhile hydrating the skin providing a smooth, baby skin matte finish. Fight the signs of aging with this great lotion!

Apply in the morning and at night! This would be a great product for someone with oily skin. This lotion also has salicylic acid which helps to minimize the size of pores! This product contains Aloe Vera ingredients for natural skin care.

Cons: Origins is not cruelty free.

Boscia Green Tea Oil Free Moisturizer

This is a great product for so many skin types! If you have normal, oily, combo, dry, or sensitive skin, you are able to use this product. Boscia is a lightweight, antioxidant infused moisturizer. The formula contains Japanese Green Tea. This natural skin care item is great for oily skin, dryness, or if you have acne.Japanese Green Tea is great for moisturizing the skin and providing an incredible soothing sensation. It will help to reduce redness and quenches the skin. The amazing antibacterial properties of Japanese Green Tea are truly amazing, it rival benzoyl peroxide!

Cons: Boscia is not cruelty free.

Kora Organics Hydrating Moisturizer for Dry Skin

Kora Organics is a great moisturizer for normal, combo, and dry skin profiles. They have a great line of various natural skin care items from face balms, to moisturizers for all skin types. They are a great natural skin care brand.

Use this hydrating moisturizer for dryness, dullness in skin, uneven texture of the skin, wrinkles, and fine lines. There are many incredible ingredients including organic rosehip, macadamia nut oils, and extracts for skin hydration. The main ingredient in this product is Aloe Vera which is a great natural skin care ingredient.
