They are used because they are cheap and companies are more concerned about their bottom line then the health of their customers and harm that their products could be causing.
It could be negligence or just straight up greed. Whatever the case is, it is up to us as consumers to be aware of what is in the products that we put on our face and bodies. Our skin takes in everything that we put in or on it. This includes absorbing all of the negative and harmful ingredients.
The FDA states that the level of phthalates, Sulfates, Parabens, formaldehyde, and other artificial ingredients are safe since the amount that is present is small. These will be your keyword triggers. With this information, you will know if this is something you should be using or something you should be staying away from.

- Formulated WITHOUT (Parabens, Sulfates, Phthalates)
- Certified Organic – Anything that is certified organic is bonafide! There are very strict rules and regulations when it comes to being certified organic. In order to be certified organic, a high percentage of the ingredients must be pure and organic.
- Vegan – This means that the product is created without animal by products. This usually means that the product you are using is cruelty free and is not tested on animals. If your makeup product has beeswax or any type of dairy or animal by product, it is not vegan.
- Gluten Free– Gluten is not only about food. Many who suffer from gluten allergies or gluten sensitivities, should use gluten free natural face moisturizers. Many products are not gluten free, but some natural makeup products are.
Ingredients like Shea Butter, Coconut Oil, Jojoba Oil, antioxidants, are all ingredients that you want in your natural face moisturizers and safe, natural makeup.
Bad Face Moisturizers:
The following are toxic skincare ingredients that should be avoided when choosing natural face moisturizers or natural face makeup products
- Paraben: Are found in too many skincare and makeup products. Parabens are linked to breast cancer, fertility issues, and reproductive issues.
- Sulfate (SLS or SLES): Major culprit of allergies, skin irritation, and skin reactions. Stay away from sulfates if you have sensitive skin!
- Phthalates: Keep products with this harmful ingredient far, far away from children.They are linked to birth defects and are endocrine disruptors. The endocrine system is responsible for all the hormones and glands that carry these hormones that keep the body in balance. Think thyroid, hypothalamus, pituitary, pineal, adrenal, ovaries for ladies, and testes for men.
- Lead: Found mostly in lipsticks and lip glosses, lead is a neurotoxin. This means that it is a poison that attacks the nervous system, which is the network of nerves that is inside our bodies that helps us to coordinate our actions and movements. Lead is a heavy metal, it has been removed from paint, yet is still in lip products. Pretty weird reasoning if you ask me!
- Formaldehyde: Not only is it a carcinogen (cancer causing), it is linked to neurotoxicity and Asthma. A study found that 20% of moisturizers contained a preservative with a formaldehyde releasers.
- Synthetic Colors & Synthetic Fragrances: If synthetic colors or fragrances are listed, these cause allergic reactions, hormone disruption, and other serious health problems.
- BHA or BHT: These toxic ingredients are Cancer Causing & linked to liver damage which can affect our other organs from functioning properly.
- Retinol & Retinyl Palmitate: Also known as Vitamin A, this is one that is quite surprising but very important that we are aware of the negative effects. It is linked to increasing the growth of tumors especially in the areas where it is applied. It may damage DNA, it is not recommended if you are Apregnant, nursing, or trying to get pregnant.
